About the Art of Inquiry Cards
This beautiful set of cards is designed to support teachers in their day to day interactions with students as inquirers. Teachers who understand the power of inquiry know that there is indeed an art to the pedagogy that drives it. Inquiry is a dynamic and interactive process involving questioning, designing, investigating, experimenting, analyzing, reflecting and acting. Underpinning the art of inquiry teaching is a strongly held view of the learner as capable and curious, with the right to participate in decisions made about what and how they learn. Like an artist, the inquiry teacher draws on a rich palette of powerful practices to facilitate learning across the day. These practices are not simply a handy tool kit of strategies. Together, they capture a way of being as a teacher and as a learner.
Detailing 10 key practices for teaching through inquiry, each card provides a set of clear and simple guidelines for bringing the practice to life. Teachers can use them to support their own efforts to strengthen the quality of their teaching – selecting cards as reminders, provocations, prompts and supports as they teach across the day. Many schools have found the cards to be a powerful resource for staff meetings, professional learning communities and walk-through. Teach practice has been carefully refined over years of classroom teaching, observations and research.
As Kath Murdoch states:
“When we see inquiry as a ‘way of being’ , there are certain practices that become habits across the day. These habits not only become part of our teaching repertoire but are similarly nurtured in learners. I wanted to create something that was practical but that also honoured the beauty of inquiry – indeed the beautiful art of teaching itself. I now have a set of these cards on my own desk and find them a daily reminder of the kind of teacher I want to be.”
